Graduate Thesis
The Blue Revolution, Shrimp Farming and Unreasonable
Women: Feminist Resistance to a Development Scheme
Gone Awry

Proliferation of intensive shrimp farms in tropical coastal areas has resulted in enormous environmental and human costs. Local indigenous women suffer for the consequences of mangrove deforestation to make way for these shrimp farms, and women worldwide have joined grassroots efforts to resist further degradation. Linking the environmental issues with the human rights issues to the global supply of shrimp, the paper examines a group of Honduran women bring their issues to the table and get their voices heard over the powerful forces of a global economic machine and increasing consumer demand for cheap shrimp.

Thanks to the gracious assistance from Goldman Prize winner Jorge Varela, I was able to spend time with the women activists of the Committee for the Defense and Development of the Flora and Fauna of the Gulf of Fonseca (CODDEFFAGOLF). www.coddeffagolf.net
