QUESTIONS
&
ANSWERS
1. Does it matter how much experience I have with
filmmaking, video or computers?
Semester-in-the-Air
is designed for all levels of digital filmmakers.
All that we ask is that you are passionate about making your own
film while traveling abroad.
You can be completely new to the craft or a seasoned filmmaker who
is just getting into the digital world.
We customize the training to fit your needs.
2. How will I be filming with so many other students?
Students
will be learning digital filmmaking in teams of 2-3 people. Students
will be helping each other make their own movies.
Each student will be learning how to plan, storyboard, direct, edit
and produce his or her own digital movie.
There will also be many opportunities for students to shoot footage
separate from the team as desired.
3. How will I transfer edited footage back to my home
computer after the trip?
Edited
footage will be stored on external hard drives and DVDs during the
trip. All student video edits will be backed up to DVDs for students
to transfer to home computers.
Students may also have footage transferred to their own external
hard drives.
4. How will I create a web site to promote my movie?
Each
student will use Semester-in-the-Air website templates to create
custom web pages to feature their final movie(s).
Each student will create a professional looking web site with the
URL address of their choice. The student site will be hosted by
the school for one year as part of the tuition fee.
5. What other sites can I put my movie on for other
people to see?
Upon
completing a movie, all students receive free entry into the RES
film festival contest.
Current.tv
and AtomFilms.com
are two of several web sites students can use to distribute their
movie(s).
6. How will I create a DVD master of my movie?
The DVD master will be created by the school as part of the tuition
fee and multiple copies can be ordered at additional expense.
Students will receive guidance in working with Customflix.com or another
DVD production house for mass production and distribution if so desired.
7. What type of digital video camera should I buy?
The bottomline is you need a 3 chip digital video camera to achieve professional results. We highly recommend purchasing the Panasonic DVX100B which is the top camera for professional filmmakers in the $3000 price range. The next recommendation is the Canon
GL2 which is now under $1700. For the budget conscious, we recommend the 3 chip Panasonic GS300 which is around $500.
We do not recommend the HD cameras such as the Sony FX1 or the incredible Panasonic HVX200 unless students have a great reason (and a bigger budget) to produce High Definition films.
8. What type of computer and software should I get
for digital video editing?
We recommend Apple laptops
or workstations loaded with at least 1 gb RAM, 100+ gb of storage,
and Final Cut Express
or Final Cut Pro,
Photoshop
Elements or Photoshop
(full version), and Dreamweaver
software.
In the event you want to purchase a Windows-based PC, we recommend
Dell
computer laptops or workstations loaded with at least 1 gb RAM,
100+ gb of storage, and Adobe
Premiere, Photoshop
Elements or Photoshop
(full version), and Dreamweaver
software.
Other editing programs like Avid
Express DV and Media
100 can also be purchased if so desired.
